The Bluewater category continues to grow, with well-known brands participating, including Salt Life, Heybo, Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Bimini Bay, AFTCO, Wave Life, Marsh Wear, 5Fin Clothing, Guy Harvey, Fish Hippie, Flood Tide Co., Hooked Soul, YETI Coolers and many more. To help showcase this evolution of consumer interest across the coastal lifestyle, Surf Expo introduced the Bluewater exhibitor category in January 2018 to give a platform to brands that resonate with fishing audiences. There is no other place where you stand on an equal footing with monster companies.” That is the way they are going to survive, by offering a broad base of products. “Even the most surfboard-oriented shops sell all sorts of products, like hats and different types of gear. It’s about watersports, it’s about boating, it’s about everything that has to do with the coastal lifestyle,” added Chris Peterson, president of Hell’s Bay Boatworks. Watch the September 2018 Bluewater show recap HERE. As far as I can see, there are so many ways that we can tie all of these brands together, and with the new Bluewater section in the show at Surf Expo, we’re going to introduce a lot more to the industry.” “If you’re a kid on the East Coast surfing, or a kid on the West Coast skating, there is a good chance you’re also bass fishing, and you’re chasing redfish and tarpon. Richardson, professional fishing guide and host of FlatsClass TV, said at the September 2018 show. “I tell you what, this is my first time here at Surf Expo, and it’s amazing to me, the crossover that we have in the brands,” Capt. And for the January 2019 show, there is an accelerated momentum surrounding the coastal lifestyle experience, as the show’s newest Bluewater category has tripled in size and the list of attending outdoor buyers and retailers has grown as they expand their search for new products. Over the past year, Surf Expo has preached about how the convergence of the surf, watersports, beach and fishing lifestyles is leading to the evolution of an all-encompassing coastal lifestyle. ORLANDO, Fla., NovemAs the world’s largest surf and watersports trade show, Surf Expo is where trends debut, and the upcoming show set for January 10-12, 2019, is no different.

The paparazzi finally caught the couple in action: sitting on a balcony in Nashville, where Alwyn was allegedly meeting Swift’s parents for the first time. “After her 1989 tour and all the attention Taylor received, she learned she had to be more protective of her personal life and she and Joe decided early on to keep their private life private.” June 5, 2017: They’re caught by the paparazzi in Nashville. “This isn’t a new couple alert or a secret relationship - the only people this has been a secret to is the media because all of us, Taylor and Joe’s closest friends and their families, were aware they have been together for several months and have known each other for a long time. While the couple's breakup was reported in April 2023, they have a long history that had some very special public moments. This includes Swift’s confirmation that Alwyn co-wrote two songs on folklore under the pseudonym William Bowery and also helped pen three tracks from Swift’s latest record, evermore. Still, a love story like Swift and Alwyn’s didn't stay behind closed doors forever, and since 2020, they’ve been more public about their relationship than ever before. Instead, her accounts would focus on promoting her work and sharing photos of her other loves: cats Olivia, Meredith, and Benjamin. Gone were the paparazzi photo ops of Swift’s days with Tom Hiddleston, and gooey Instagram pics-like the ones she’d posted with Calvin Harris-would no longer populate her social media. When Taylor Swift first began dating actor Joe Alwyn more than six years ago, it was almost immediately clear the couple had come to an agreement: Their relationship would be an intimate but private one, and they’d be a united front in protecting that privacy. Once the marriage equality legislation clears the Senate, it will head back to the House and, if passed, to President Biden's desk for his signature.Īn earlier version of the Respect for Marriage Act passed the House with support from 47 Republicans this summer. "We must take full advantage of the coming weeks to deliver results for the people." "Whether it's strengthening our economy, improving our immigration system, protecting our national security, or safeguarding democracy around the world, we have important work ahead of us in December," House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer wrote in a letter to his Democratic colleagues Sunday. But the December work period will also be filled with standard bills that Congress must take up, which will take up floor time. In the House, the lame-duck session marks Democrats' final opportunity to act on their legislative priorities before Republicans take control of the lower chamber with a narrow majority in January. Washington - Lawmakers are returning to Washington this week for the final sprint before the end of the 117th Congress, and the House and Senate face a laundry list of legislative items before the year's end, ranging from a must-pass bill to keep federal agencies operating to a plan to reform how Congress counts electoral votes. If you'll be in Denver, San Diego, Portland or Seattle over the next few weeks, join us at one of these concerts to celebrate our victory so far, and to sound the death knell for the TPP.What the White House and Democrats will focus on during the lame duck session of Congress 08:50 This Saturday, we'll again be joining with a coalition of other groups to Rock Against the TPP, at the kick-off of a massive rally and concert tour in Denver. That's why now is not the time to let up the pressure on the administration to finally abandon this fatally flawed deal. If it is, then the fight will begin again. If the future of United States trade policy is not to reflect the failed legacy of anti-user agreements such as ACTA, the USTR will have little choice but to bite the bullet and embrace a more transparent, participatory model of trade negotiation that fairly reflects the needs of users, cultural institutions, and innovative businesses, rather than only those of rich entertainment corporations and pharmaceutical companies.Īlthough Leader Pelosi's stand is a significant victory, it is not an iron-clad guarantee that the TPP won't be put before Congress for a vote during the lame duck session of Congress. If it doesn't, then the TPP will never come into force, which will amount to a significant blow against the opaque, lobbyist-driven lawmaking practiced by the United States Trade Representative (USTR), and a cautionary lesson for the conclusion of subsequent trade agreements such as the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), and the Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA). That in turn casts doubt on whether the United States will ever ratify this agreement in its present form. Combined with the stated opposition to the TPP of both presidential candidates, and the likelihood that other House Democrats will follow Leader Pelosi's courageous lead, it is now significantly less likely that the TPP will be introduced during the lame duck session, or if introduced, that it will pass the House.ĮFF's Jeremy Malcolm addresses a rally outside Pelosi's office. Thank you, Leader Pelosi, for standing up for users to block this undemocratic, anti-user deal. Please be assured that I will oppose the TPP as it is currently written or any deal that attempts to separate commerce from the environment and will work to ensure that our nation's trade policies include increased transparency, more consultation, and stronger protections to create jobs, strengthen human rights, and preserve the environment. And with your help, we succeeded! In a letter that she handed us at our meeting, Leader Pelosi wrote:Īs Congress and the American people review the finalized terms of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), we must put American workers first to allow our economy to grow and America to succeed. Today, EFF joined a broad coalition of other public interest groups at Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi's office in San Francisco, to present her with a petition carrying an incredible 209,419 signatures with a request to oppose the introduction of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) during the post-election "lame duck" session of Congress. I'm not personally bothered by any of it, though I understand as a culture we are trying to move forward. My viewpoint may be tempered by the fact that I've never really been able to decide if Breakfast is even good the last time I tried to watch it, I even found Audrey Hepburn irritating. And honestly, even if we don't get raging portrayals to that degree these days, has the relationship of Hollywood and Asians really progressed that much in the intervening decades? It's very rare to see a cliched stereotype played to such heights in a major film, to such a degree that it backfires upon itself. That sort of directness rarely lends itself well to film characters, but since the value of Yunioshi to Breakfast at Tiffany's is dubious at best, I feel it has more positive impact in society where its notoriety sticks in the public consciousness. Cursing someone under your breath is such a cowardly thing if you're going to do it, do it so the gods above poke their heads out at the disturbance. Personally speaking, in real life I much prefer loud, raging racism/sexism/etc. I don't think it's so much anti-Japanese so much as just Asian in general. Not in terms of its use in the film, but because it's such a naked stereotype that it's eye-opening and prompts one where to question whether other more well disguised portrayals might stem from the same ignorant roots. I personally think the Yunioshi character is actually a good thing. The black main character regularly outsmarts the ignorant racists in the town he was sent to protect. The joke is that an old woman (apparently also the actress who played the mom in Leave it to Beaver) is somehow in touch with the slang used by two very different people.Īnd Blazing Saddles' racism is for the purpose of mocking racism. What I like about the " I speak jive" scene in Airplane is that the joke could work with other kinds of slang. Is it just a matter of time? Will future generations feel indifferent, if not uncomfortable, towards the brief racism in Airplane! (1980) and the thorough racism in Blazing Saddles (1974)? I'm having a tough time citing racism that I find funny that isn't against black people, which gives me pause. I wonder what makes some kinds of racist jokes okay and others not okay. There's no excuse for racism, but anti-Japanese racism is more understandable if it happened during a time when the US was at war with Japan. Only one scene towards the end comes to mind where he plays a more significant role, but creative editing could probably omit his speaking lines from that scene as well.Ī film professor pointed out to me that unlike some other racism in film and TV, Japan was not an enemy of the United States in 1961. He could have been removed from the script before his parts were filmed, or even removed in editing and little would change. Most of the jokes are based on old Asian stereotypes, old even when the film was released in 1961. He is almost entirely a comedic relief character. The character is Asian but Rooney is not. The film was also nominated for three other Academy Awards: Best Actress for Hepburn, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction. One of the minor characters in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) is I.Y. Hepburn regarded it as one of her most challenging roles, since she was an introvert required to play an extrovert.īreakfast at Tiffany’s was received positively at the time, and won two Academy Awards: Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Moon River”, which was also selected as the fourth most memorable song in Hollywood history by the American Film Institute in 2004. Hepburn’s portrayal of Holly Golightly as the naïve, eccentric café society girl is generally considered to be one of the actress’s most memorable and identifiable roles. Starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, and featuring Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam, and Mickey Rooney, the film was initially released on October 5, 1961, by Paramount Pictures. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a 1961 American romantic comedy film directed by Blake Edwards and written by George Axelrod, loosely based on Truman Capote’s 1958 novella of the same name. Not too bad! I’m still wondering if it’s possible to repeat the one instance where a brave British infantrymen managed to attack a ship with a recoilless rifle during the Falklands War. Ships – and only certain types of ships, like coastal defense – will be able to reach about 5-10% of the ground map. And while the ability to deploy those depends on the map, Eugen has made certain that you won’t be able to just in the sea and bombard hapless pre-1975 Polish infantry decks with missiles. One of the greatest changes in Red Dragon is the addition of swimming units, from amphibious vehicles and river boats and up to destroyers and frigates. They talked sea battles, morale systems, changes to deck building, single- and multiplayer match set ups, campaigns and even game speed. A PCGMedia’s journalist had some questions for Alexis LeDressay, the CEO of developer Eugen Systems. These points can be altered by these bonuses though, which are available when starting a new deck. Each slots in different category cost different activation points. All the units are unlocked, but there are limitations to what you can add, through Activation Points: all decks have 33 Activation Points initially. The deck in Wargame: AirLand Battle works in a very different way. In Wargame: European Escalation, players must first complete objectives from the campaign and multiplayer matches to earn stars, which is the currency to unlock new units and their variants to be added to their deck. The deck in Wargame: European Escalation initially has a very few (and mostly underperforming) units unlocked. But in my book, I made the president a woman. Also, I knew that many children were orphaned during the Great Flu, the writer Mary McCarthy among them. I thought it was more than likely that a global pandemic would occur during my lifetime. Fauci and other experts-not a question of if but when. Sigrid Nunez: With Salvation City, I’d known for a long time that another pandemic like the Great Flu of 1918 was-according to Dr. Jane Ciabattari: You also wrote about a pandemic in your 2010 novel Salvation City. Were you influenced by earlier authors who wrote about the plagues/pandemics of their time, like Katherine Anne Porter, whose Pale Horse, Pale Rider is drawn from her own experience surviving the Spanish flu of 1918? I wanted to imagine what a crisis of that magnitude might be like in a polarized and in so many ways dysfunctional country like the US. You’re always worried that what you find funny might fall flat for other people.” I was particularly pleased that my agent and my editor and other people who’ve read the book so far have appreciated the humor in the novel. I finished it before showing it to anyone. So I began writing about was happening right at that moment-to me, to all of us-and sometime later I took those pages and went on writing, and that turned into The Vulnerables. Each of us was asked to read briefly and I decided to write something new just for the reading. Then it came time for the annual spring faculty reading at BU, where I’d been teaching. “I did manage to finish a long review essay. “Like so many other writers, at the outbreak of Covid and in the early days of lockdown-not to mention the ongoing mad, bad behavior of our political leadership-I was too stunned to get much writing done,” she responded. How did the pandemic affect the writing of The Vulnerables? I asked Nunez via email, each of us on a different coast. “To be the only pedestrian for blocks, to have an acre of Central Park to yourself.” “…I couldn’t help feeling guilty about the pleasure I took in the lifeless streets,” she writes. Later she nails it again: “…and weren’t we all sick of hearing it: uncertainty was the only uncertainty to be had.” The Vulnerables, which follows the 2018 National Book Award-winning The Friend and What Are You Going Through (2020), is Nunez’s ode to this strange historic moment-to survival, community, random connection, and even isolation. "To me, Stephen was my husband and the father of my children one does not say to one's husband, 'Oh, you're so clever! I must worship the ground under your feet, or in this case, wheels.' I found this kind of sycophantic attitude-the attitude adopted by so many people around Stephen-exceptionally frustrating and, of course, it grew a lot worse when we finally had to engage carers.Sigrid Nunez opens her ninth novel with the first line in Virginia Woolf’s The Years: “It was an uncertain spring.” Not surprisingly, given the rigor with which Nunez approaches language, it’s an acutely accurate description of the early pandemic months in New York City she describes in The Vulnerables, when it wasn’t clear how COVID-19 originated, how it spread, and how to protect yourself. "I rather felt that the family had been left behind," she told Radio Times in 2014, according to the Independent. They had three children together: Lucy, Timothy and Robert.
